Most
schools and non-profit organizations work on a very tight budget.
Too often because of a lack of funding corners need to be cut and things
that are important end up not happening.
So here
is the good news. There are orgainzations and agencies devoted to
getting FREE materials out to those who need them.
Check
out each of these.

LOCALLY FOCUSED ACTION AGAINST
SUBSTANCE ABUSE
Join Together Online has just launched a
valuable new tool for driving locally-focused action against substance
abuse. It can provide you with an unprecedented opportunity to reach concerned
citizens in your state, at no cost to you. We believe locally-focused action
is essential to meaningful policy change. To make this resource really
come alive, we want your participation.

Addict in the Family by Dr. Andrew Byrne
is a very valuable contribution -- addressing a problem that is extremely
widespread, affecting huge members of people directly and indirectly, but
associated with so much stigma and shame that there's an understandable
reluctance to seek the facts from authoritative sources. This book provides
answers to many questions, and does so in straightforward, clear and yet
in no way condescending or patronizing manner. Sadly, the lack of information
regarding drug use and its treatment applies to physicians and other healthcare
providers almost to the same degree as to 'lay people.' Accordingly, this
book by Dr. Byrne would be very worthwhile reading for his medical and
nursing colleagues!

AMA Report on harm to the
Brain of Youth who drink alcohol.
http://www.hopenetworks.org/addiction/alcohol/brain3.pdf
Landmark NAS Report Full
Text
Alcohol use by young people is extremely
dangerous - both to themselves and society at large. Underage alcohol use
is associated with traffic fatalities, violence, unsafe sex, suicide, educational
failure, and other problem behaviors that diminish the prospects of future
success, as well as health risks – and the earlier teens start drinking,
the greater the danger. Despite these serious concerns, the media continues
to make drinking look attractive to youth, and it remains possible and
even easy for teenagers to get access to alcohol. http://www.nap.edu/books/0309089352/html/
Prevention Book Highlights
Campus Efforts Against Drinking
“A Matter of Degree Advocacy Initiative,”
showcases the prevention efforts of four campus-community coalitions. The
book, presents the case histories of the University of Delaware and the
City of Newark; the University of Iowa and Iowa City; the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln and the City of Lincoln and the University of Vermont
and the City of Burlington.
A Matter of Degree was designed by the national
program office at the American Medical Association and supported by The
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to more effectively test the public health/environmental
management model. From 2000-2002, the campus-community coalitions worked
through media advocacy, strategic planning and community organizing to
help change local public policies and community environments that affect
student high-risk drinking.
The book is now available as a downloadable
PDF at, www.alcoholpolicysolutions.net. You can order free copies by calling
Tina Mosley at (312) 464-4516 or email

CALCULATING THE EFFECTS
OF TAX CHANGES ON CONSUMPTION AND REVENUE
Find out how much your state will gain in
revenue due to alcohol excise tax increases! In Arizona a 10 cent
increase in tha tax/gallon of beer would mean $35.5 million more in tax
revenue and would raise the price of a six pack by 15 cents. A 10
cent increase in liquor tax would increase revenues by $22 million and
the price of a bottle by 61 cents.
